Winter hike Moosfluh - Riederalp closed

The Great Aletsch Glacier, the 4000-metre peaks of Valais, Villa Cassel. On this spectacular panoramic winter hike, it’s one highlight after another.

From Riederalp you take the cable car to Moosfluh, one of the view points in the Aletsch Arena. Enjoy the views of the Great Aletsch Glacier and the snowcapped peaks of the Valais Alps before heading west down the ridge to Breitebode. From there, the winter hiking trail follows the Härdernagrat up to the mountain station of the Hohfluh ski lift. Panoramic views accompany you into the next section of the route – with the unique natural landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage site on your right and the sun-drenched plateau and 4,000-metre peaks of Valais on your left. The path heads down to Riederfurka where you pass alongside the impressive Villa Cassel, which is closed during the winter months. The final stage of the trail is a gentle downhill walk to Riederalp.   The tour comprises a number of separate sections. Please check the winter sports report for the status (open/closed).

Moosfluh - Hohfluh - Riederfurka - Riederalp

Public transport

By train from Brig or Oberwald to Mörel-Filet, then on foot to the Riederalp cable car (Aletsch Bahnen AG). Take the cable car up to Riederalp.

Approach

Take Kantonsstrasse 19 to the Mörel-Filet exit, then follow signs for the parking facilities. Proceed on foot to the Riederalp cable car (Aletsch Bahnen AG), which takes you up to Riederalp.

Parking

  • Limited parking spaces (charges apply) at Mörel-Filet station. Further parking options are signposted.
  • Large pay multi-storey car parks at the entrance to Mörel-Filet and in the village centre.

  •  Take extra care protecting yourself from the sun at altitude. UV radiation can be exceptionally strong, even in cloudy weather.

  •  Plan hike carefully: take into consideration fitness level of each participant, weather forecast and season.

  •  Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains, without warning. Appropriate clothing is therefore essential, along with adequate supplies of food and water. In uncertainweather, turn back in good time.

  •  Do not venture onto glaciers without a mountain guide.

  •  Take note of the warning signs that point out the constant danger, especially the danger of avalanches.

  •  Inform others of planned route, and whenever possible, avoid going alone.

The altitude and the route mean that good footwear is absolutely essential for this winter hike.
