The tradition of Carnival in the Saastal (Saas valley) dates back more than a century. Before the beginning of Lent, people would dress up in costume and go out on to the streets to drive away evil spirits. According to oral tradition, the so-called Göiggler first appeared at the beginning of the 19th Century. Two of these characters, clothed in jute, would walk on either side of each procession to maintain order. Today, the Göiggler steal the show at the 15-odd processions in the Saastal. Wearing costumes that they have made themselves from fine fabrics, they walk through the streets, mostly in groups, carrying bells and “horse tails” made of real horsehair. The costumes consist of a black undergarment over which the Göiggler put on a series of colourful skirt-like garments, trimmed with fur, around the neck, waist, wrists and calves; they also wear a mask and a matching hat. They also wear a leather belt with one big or several small cowbells, sheep bells or horse bells, fastened around the waist. 

The treasure hunt begins at the mountain station of the Furggstalden chairlift, where you will find the first station. Just above the hamlet of Furggstalden is a road leading uphill, where further clues await. Walk past the entrance to the adventure trail and the Wasserbodu barbecue area, across the lift area and further along the slopes. Once you’ve reached the highest point of the route, the path will branch off from the road to the left at a hidden concrete construction. Have you discovered the next station at the former stable? The journey back to Furggstalden will take you across mountain meadows, and your next task will be waiting for you in the middle of the hamlet. From here, follow the educational trail through the larch forest to Saas-Almagell. Along this section of the route, you'll learn no end of interesting facts about this diverse habitat before reaching stations six and seven. The last part of the route will lead you along the burbling Almageller bisse to the eighth station, before descending back into the village, where the treasure awaits you.

Start from the Hannig with its superb panorama for a 5-kilometre descent into Saas-Fee. Pure fun for the whole family! The panoramic summit of the Hannig, located at 2,350 metres above sea level, is the starting point for this sledge run. Enjoy the breathtaking view before setting off on the 5-kilometre long descent at lightning speed into the valley below. Sun-worshippers especially will love the terrace of Hannig’s mountain restaurant as well as the stunning panorama it offers. It’s a moment that you’ll be remembering for a long time to come.
